The Hartford property claims: documentation the desk adjuster can approve

Whether you're the contractor writing the estimate or the homeowner living with the damage, a The Hartford claim moves on paperwork. Here is how The Hartford says its process works, taken from its own site, and how we prepare estimates and supplements for it.

What The Hartford publishes about contractors and additional damage

Additional damage and supplements

The Hartford's public site does not describe a supplement submission process. In practice the supplement goes to the assigned claim handler through the same document channel as the claim; we write it so the handler can approve it line by line.

Recoverable depreciation (described on The Hartford's AARP program page): The Hartford first pays the actual cash value of the damaged property minus the deductible; before additional payments the policyholder may need to show a signed contract that repairs have been completed or property replaced. Replacement cost is paid once the damage is repaired or replaced, so there may be more than one payment, and invoices or receipts help obtain the replacement cost payment. [source]

Catastrophe response: The Hartford describes a dedicated Catastrophe Claims Operation team for property damage from severe weather, wildfire or other disasters, reached through its claims specialists at 800-243-5860. [source]

After a disaster, The Hartford's catastrophe response vehicle lets policyholders have their claim handled on site; The Hartford says it may be able to issue payments on site and keeps phone and internet connectivity by satellite and a generator if local utilities are down. [source]

Contractor guidance after a storm: The Hartford advises having the claims adjuster inspect the damage and review repair contracts before signing, paying by check or credit card rather than cash, asking for proof of insurance and licensing, and being wary of contractors who insist on submitting insurance claims on the policyholder's behalf or ask them to endorse insurance checks.
