Progressive property claims: documentation the desk adjuster can approve

Whether you're the contractor writing the estimate or the homeowner living with the damage, a Progressive claim moves on paperwork. Here is how Progressive says its process works, taken from its own site, and how we prepare estimates and supplements for it.

Filing and tracking a Progressive home claim

How claims are filed

  • Online at progressive.com: log in to a Progressive account to report or view a claim, or continue as a guest to report a claim or view a claim. [source]
  • Progressive mobile app, or by calling the Progressive claims center; non-customers can file online as a guest or call. [source]
  • By phone at 1-800-776-4737: for Progressive Home policies, Progressive connects the caller with the company that issued the policy (named in the policy documents), which handles the claim. [source]

Tracking and sending documents

Claim status is viewed on progressive.com by logging in to a Progressive account, or as a guest through the view-my-claim option. [source]

To create the estimate, the insurer may ask for photos, receipts if belongings are damaged, or schedule a time for an adjuster to inspect the home. [source]

Send your estimate or supplement through the channel Progressive names above, and keep the upload confirmation with the claim file.

What Progressive publishes about contractors and additional damage

Additional damage and supplements

The Progressive Home Estimate Handbook says to submit, and get approval for, any repair costs or damages that exceed the estimate before starting the work; the estimate is based on visible and known damage at the time and can vary if further damage or cost differences are presented later. If more damage is discovered during repairs that was not on the estimate, the insurer may send another payment. [source]

Progressive Home home, condo and renters policies are placed through Progressive Advantage Agency with insurers affiliated with Progressive and with unaffiliated insurers; each insurer is solely responsible for the claims on its policies, and Progressive is responsible only for claims on policies it underwrites. [source]

Home, condo and renters claims: the policyholder is free to use any contractor (or do the work themselves); the claims rep coordinates the process and keeps the policyholder updated. [source]

Estimate step: the insurer reviews the estimate with the policyholder, explaining the repair cost and the deductible or out-of-pocket amount, then sends a payment for the estimated amount, with a letter explaining any items it did not include. [source]

Recoverable depreciation: a claim may include two payments, a cash payment for the initial damage and a second payment after repairs are done; if the estimate shows replacement cost benefits, tell the claims adjuster when repairs are starting or finished, and invoices, signed repair contracts and photos may be needed to receive those benefits. [source]

Catastrophe response: Progressive's National Catastrophe Response Team of specially trained claims representatives responds to weather events such as hurricanes, hailstorms, tornadoes and floods that affect large numbers of customers; after the estimate, the home estimate handbook explains terms and next steps.
